Arrest Made After Shots Fired

Martin Police Department Officer Clay Dean arrested Dexter Sowell, 34 of Martin at around 6:24 p.m. Saturday.  Officers were on routine patrol when they heard a single gunshot in the area of 160 Old Fulton Rd. Officers Clay Dean and Nick Combs initially investigated the gunshot shortly after hearing it.  They discovered that a black male in a white sedan had just shot towards a group of individuals near Park Place Apartments. No one was struck by the gunfire and the assailant drove off after firing the shot.  Victims and witnesses told officers that the assailant, Dexter Sowell had come back to the location shortly after on foot and initiated a fight with some of the original victims. During this second incident, he had punched one victim while walking away.  Sowell was located in the area by officers and taken into custody. His vehicle was located at 107 Knox St. and the gun used during the incident was located by officers after receiving information about its location. The weapon involved was a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun.  Sowell was charged with Reckless Endangerment (involving a firearm), four counts of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, one count of Simple Assault and Disorderly Conduct. He will appear for an initial arraignment on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 in Weakley County General Sessions Court.
