Arrest for Filing a False Police Report

On February 9, 2017 at approx. 11:36 pm, Christian Griffis, 19 of Martin, TN, came to the Martin Police Department and filed a police report with Ptl. Trae Vaughn stating that he had been walking in Martin earlier that evening on University St. and was detained by a white male that identified himself as a Martin Police Department officer. He further stated that the man was approx. 6 feet tall, wearing dark pants and a long sleeve shirt and had arrived in a tan four door car. Mr. Griffis stated that the man placed him in handcuffs and told him that he was investigating a complaint pertaining to Mr. Griffis harassing someone through Snapchat. Mr. Griffis said that the man took his phone, looked at it and then released him.
This case was forwarded to the Criminal Investigations Division of the Martin Police Department. Inv. Drew Vernon and Inv. Mark Rushing made contact with Mr. Griffis on February 10, 2017 at approx. 10:30 am and he came to the Martin Police Department to speak to them in reference to this incident.
Upon speaking to Mr. Griffis, he stated that he made the entire incident up because he was mad at his friends for making him walk back to Browning Hall from Wal-Mart. Mr. Griffis said that he was not stopped by anyone and he did complete a written statement pertaining to the fact that he had provided false information about the entire event.
Mr. Griffis was released on a criminal summons for the charge of False Reports and will appear for an arraignment in Weakley County General Sessions Court on February 14, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
